“As a parent, I can attest to this creative outlet that allows students to channel their ideas and talents and hone their skills while building character, accountability, and purpose in the community.”

The MAPS Media Institute empowers young people through a unique mix of creativity, communication skills, confidence, and inspiration. Our nationally recognized and award-winning program combines the best of science, technology, engineering, the arts and math (STEAM) into an exciting hands-on learning experience. We offer free after-school programming in design, film, music, and technology.

MAPS has been recognized and honored for excellence by the President’s Committee on Arts and Humanities, the national 21st Century Education STEM Showcase and the regional Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. For more than 10 years, we’ve excelled at producing young people ready to succeed in a complex communication-based world. Our success rate exceeds that of any school-based program in the region for retaining and graduating 8th through 12th graders. We’re motivated by the fact that 85% of MAPS students go on to attend college, far surpassing the countywide average of 30%.

MAPS is state-licensed as a local education agency and runs annually from September until May. We provide a supportive, energetic and safe environment in a state-of-the-art communications and technology center. All staff are professionals in their respective fields and are committed to the master-apprentice approach to learning.

They listen, challenge, engage and explore rather than lecture and test. In addition to their proactive coursework, students develop essential life talents, including critical thinking, innovation, strong communication skills, teamwork, problem solving and leadership.

The MAPS curriculum uniquely combines education with the real world of business. Our classes are commissioned to produce media for paying clients including Montana’s Office of the Governor and State Farm Insurance. This contract work helps support our free programming and more importantly, provides the students with real-world experience in pitching, marketing, creating and collaborating with members of the business community. In 2010, MAPS initiated its service-learning “GIVE BACK” program, allowing MAPS students and staff to donate their time and talent to community organizations such as the Montana Hope Project, the Bitterroot Valley Youth Homes and many others. This pro-bono work also broadens student awareness of community needs and the importance of good
citizenship and giving back.

The MAPS program thrives by attracting quality faculty, providing state-of-the-art facilities and maintaining a healthy creative environment. We can only do this through the generosity of supporters such as you. Your tax-deductible gift will change lives as we endeavor to broaden the reach of MAPS and its transformative impact on local communities.
